The Great Workshop Build - Day 3

Wednesday 26th October, 2005

Good progress, despite some difficulties during the day!
We started well, although the flooring hadn’t arrived and so leveled the base so it was now almost perfectly flat (despite all my attempts to make it so during the laying of the slabs), At this point Clive went out to try and get the wood for the top-plate (we would need this later) and called me shortly after to say his car had broken down!! The RAC did a sterling job and got him towed home, although he still had to arrange for his trusty car mechanic to come around and fix the broken clutch-cable. Eventually the flooring arrived and we set-to laying it.

Workshop - Fixing the flooring

Workshop - Flooring complete! - well, except one small space

Although the skies were dark and oppressive, we had only one rain shower during the whole day, which made things much easier.

Workshop - I never get to play with the power tools

Once the flooring was in place, we took the pre-assembled wall frames that were completed yesterday and set them out on the base and screwed together – ensuring that the frames were both square and level.

Workshop - One side up

Workshop - Three sides...

We decided to add some extra supports that we had not initially planned into the project, this give the extra benefit of making the whole structure far more sturdy and will ensure the verticals continue to remain perfectly upright.

Now to fit the door frame – this was relatively simple as we only had to add a spacer 2×3 to bring the door in far enough so that the door handle would not crash into the internal walls as the door was opened (but yet the door could be opened fully).

This then gave us the exact dimensions we required to cut and fit the final (front) panel – this will also house the only window (other than those in the door) in the whole construction, so it was important to ensure we had the window placed correctly.

Workshop - Hey, someone is looking at us

Then finally, we went and collected some extra wood for the top plate (to bind the whole thing together before the roof is assembled) and fitted this in place – this also added to the sturdiness of the whole structure and provided the “icing on the cake“ in ensuring that there was no movement in the walls.

Tomorrow – the roof!
